Today was my first race in a long time. I decided to make a post after the race because I wasn’t sure how it would go and if this blew up in my face I figured the fewer people who knew the better. I have to admit I was nervous this morning because it has been a long time since I have run in any race. Today’s distance was 5k, definitely a good one to start with. I represented with my brc hat and tech shirt. Pictures to follow in other races when I get my official race shirts. (Thank you Lori and Cody-www.brccoloradosprings.com). I started off very conservatively because I didn’t know the course really well and wanted to be sure I had enough in the tank at the end. When we got to mile one I was still feeling very good so I picked it up a little bit and maintained that pace for the next mile. As I got to Mile two I had the feeling that I needed to turn it up even a little more. There were some killer hills but the trail running I have done with Shawn (mountain goat) and the pavement running I have done all last week really payed off. The uphills were where I ended up passing a lot of people. When we got into the baseball stadium and ran around the outside track I put into practice the track workouts we have done and passed more people. I am sure they were thrilled that I was passing them right at the end but that is racing right? I ended up beating over half of the field so even a little better than being mid pack. As I was approaching the stadium I saw Cody going on his cool down and I think he was surprised how quickly I was coming in. I was surprised as well. The training is definitely paying off. I am not saying I am a speedy Gonzalez yet but I am definitely a speedy turtle. The below represents how I felt in the race today. More races to come.
